Obituary for Joseph Picard

Joseph Picard
Mr. Joseph Picard, age 79, of Jena, passed from this life on Monday, April 17, 2017 at the Jena Nursing and Rehab facility in Jena, Louisiana. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gallagher Funeral Home and Crematory, Ball, Louisiana.

Joseph “Joe” was born February 1, 1938 to the union of his parents, Olive and Louis Picard in Franklin, Louisiana and was baptized at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Franklin. He became a member of Midway Baptist Church, Jena in 2008.

Joe was predeceased by all 9 members of his family including his parents, brothers Louis, Harry, Henry and William and sisters Louise, Marion and Esther; and by his dear friend Sybil Methvin.

Joe suffered polio as a child and a stroke at the age of 18. Even with these drawbacks, he began working for the St. Mary Parish School Board in 1977 as a custodian at Centerville. Joe moved with friends from Franklin to Olla, LA in 1989, following oil field and other odd jobs until his health deteriorated and he was no longer able to take care of himself. Joe entered the LaSalle Nursing home in late 1999 and moved to Jena Nursing and Rehab (JNRH) in 2009.

Joe never met a stranger and JNRH was his home and the residents were his family. He also leaves special friends Mr. Elzie Smith, Sallie Smith Thornhill and Sheldon Boothe, Gloria Ainsworth and Will and Linda Butler. Jena and special niece Mary LaJaunie and cousin, Adam Picard, Jr., Franklin to mourn his passing. A special thanks to Mr. Walter Dorrah and Mildred Powell for handling Joe’s legal affairs with dignity and grace and to all the medical professionals who have treated Joe with love and respect for the past 18 years. We acknowledge the kindness of All Saints Hospice for their assistance in the last few months of Joe’s life.

A memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Daniel Breithaupt officiating at JNRH. In lieu of flowers, please remember Joe with a smile and a laugh and a “Hello how Y’all Doin’” to everyone you meet, or buy yourself an LSU hat, or put an LSU flag on your wheelchair and fly down the hallway enjoying the breeze, and always always respond to your favorite people with “Yeah Buddy” and a thumb bump!
