Life Story for Opal Smith (White)

Opal Smith (White)
Opal Sue White Smith, 83, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2018 in Tifton, Georgia at Rehabilitation Center of South Georgia.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 20 at Gallagher Funeral Home in Ball, Louisiana. A home-going service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Gallagher Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery, near Sikes (Hwy 126), Louisiana following the services.

Mrs. Smith was a resident of Tifton since 2003, following the death of her husband in 1999. Prior to that, she was a lifelong resident of Ball, LA. She was born to Millard and Ida Jordan White on December 23, 1934 in Lacamp, LA. She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 siblings, and her husband, Aubrey Ray Smith, and is survived by her three children: Danny Smith (Mary) of Bell, Florida, Sheila Smith Carson (Jimmy) of Tifton, Georgia, and Mandy Smith Taylor of Atlanta, Georgia. 8 grandchildren: Lori Peal Prince of Warner Robins, Georgia, Leslie Peal Slappy (Vic) of Warner Robins, Georgia, Ashley Smith Peart (Ron) of Alexandria, Louisiana, Stephanie Smith Poston (Nathan) of Deville, Louisiana, Kimberly Deville of Cameron, North Carolina, Matthew Deville of Ball, LA , Eric Shane Douzart of Montgomery, LA and Samantha Lee. She also has 19 great-grandchildren. Sue has one surviving sibling, Sharron White McCan (Linward) of Ruby, LA and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sue graduated from Tioga High School in 1953 and in addition to being wife and mother, she worked for Waterworks District #3 in Tioga and, after graduating from Alexandria Vo-Tech in September 1989, she worked for the Town of Ball as Town Clerk, where she retired in 1997. She was the pianist for Pinehurst Baptist Church for over 20 years, where she was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) and also served on several committees that were instrumental in the fellowship and growth of the Church.

Sue was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Tifton, Georgia, where she met many special friends. She was most comfortable in the kitchen cooking for her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. While living in Tifton at West Haven Senior Village, she became part of a close-knit group of women that was dubbed “the porch ladies”, where they gathered on their porches for friendship and laughter. She dearly loved and will miss these “porch ladies” and her Church family.

Due to transportation issues the family requests no flowers.
