Obituary for Sandra E. Baxley (McNaughton)
Sandra McNaughton Baxley was born November 29, 1945 along with her beloved twin brother William Preston “Sandy” McNaughton to John Robert and Bill Hayes McNaughton in Alexandria, Louisiana. She enjoyed growing up with her brother and older sister Sue McNaughton Williams.
Sandra grew up in Colfax, Louisiana, attended Colfax Elementary and graduated from Colfax High School in 1963. She then attended Alexandria Beauty School, graduated with honors, and competed in hair shows across the south with her dear friend Jessie Young Brown. She went on to open her own salon where she enjoyed providing excellent service for her clients.
Sandra married Eddie Baxley in 1964 and shared 55 loving years of marriage with him. Eddie and Sandra had two children, Michelle Baxley Lemoine and Micki Baxley Bieber. As her children grew older, she decided to close her salon and focus on being a devoted wife and mother. She and Eddie raised the girls together and were active members of Walnut Grove Baptist Church. There they built a family rooted in Christianity and a love for the Lord. While worshiping at Walnut Grove, they made life-long friendships. Sunday nights after church were often spent with those friends. Having pot lucks on those Sunday nights with the Meekers and the LaCours was something she held dear and she cherished those memories through the years. She also looked forward to their yearly family beach trip with the Baxleys from Winnfield, Louisiana. That week each summer spent on the beach at The Holloway House surrounded by sandy teenagers and her dear Caroline and Ernest was the highlight of her year.
Known for loving to dance in high school, she enjoyed being the Louisiana Pecanette sponsor for many years. Traveling around the state with the group to perform, not only did she serve as a sponsor, but more importantly, Sandra served as a role model for the girls. By modeling class and grace, Sandra touched the lives of many teenage girls in Grant Parish and helped them grow into wonderful young women.
Sandra was also known for her love of cooking and collection of cook books. She showed her love for her family and friends by making delicious meals and treats for them. Perhaps her favorite thing to do was to make a mountain of her famous fried apple pies and surprise her friends with them.
However, her most important role was that of grandmother. Her grandsons, Zac Lemoine, Jackson Bieber, and Harrison Bieber were her heart. She and Zac were true partners in crime. They spent many days seeing what mischief and fun they could get into and often got themselves into more than a little trouble. While her relationship with Jackson and Harrison was different as her health declined, it was no less filled with love. She always watched out for her boys, often slipping them a little pocket money as she called it when they would go in to check on “Maw”. She made sure Paw Paw indulged their love of hunting and fishing and they often got into a fair amount of trouble themselves.
In later years as her health worsened, she loved spending time with her dogs. Sandra made sure those dogs had better lives than most people. At any time, family and friends could go into their house and be greeted by a chorus of barks and find her lap covered with her animals. She often searched the internet for just the right dog and of course Eddie indulged her by going state to state to get her newest baby. During her last hospital stay, she told her family she just wanted to go home and be with her dogs. Again, Eddie made that happen. The reward was her smile when she was reunited with Mrs. Bourbon, Joque, Mimi, and Whimsy.
Sandra passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on February 10, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Robert McNaughton, Bill McNaughton, and brother William Preston “Sandy” McNaughton. She will forever be remembered as the wonderful wife, mother, and friend she was.
