Obituary for Howard C. Gaines Sr.

Howard C. Gaines, Sr., 81, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2019 in Alexandria, Louisiana surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on December 2, 1937, in Norfolk, Virginia. It was there where he met and fell in love with his childhood sweetheart, Ruby Lee Gaines.

On April 14, 1956, shortly after Mr. Howard’s enlistment in the U.S. Air Force, they were married and started a family. As a military man, Mr. Howard traveled extensively and finally with his family moved to Alexandria, Louisiana, where he and Mrs. Ruby would live together until their passing.

Mr. Howard lived a full and active life and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 24 years of service, and then retired from the VA Hospital.

Mr. Howard will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by four sons, Dr. Howard Gaines, Jr. (Nivia) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Chief Anthony Gaines, Sr. (Tina) of Alexandria, Louisiana, John Gaines of New York City, New York, and Bryan Gaines (Dani) of Bossier City, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Howard Gaines, III, Desiree Gaines Brown, Preston Gaines, Anthony Gaines, Jr., and Angelina Johnston; five great-grandchildren, Derrick "P.J." Davis, Jr., Darren Davis, Aveline Johnston, Caddock Johnston, and Dawson Gaines.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Lee Gaines; parents, Luther Gaines and Sarah Beckett Gaines; and brother, Horace Gaines.
