Obituary for Vernon Gene Hopkins, Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted for Vernon Gene Hopkins, Sr., age 85, on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Gallagher Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Blaine Ussery officiating. Interment with Naval Military Honors will follow in Craig Cemetery in Kolin, Louisiana. Visitation will be held at Gallagher Funeral Home beginning at 12:00 noon, prior to service.
Mr. Hopkins passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, November 22, 2019 at Christus St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, Louisiana. He served in the United States Navy; earning five Naval Medallions; including, the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal (European Clasp) and was a member of Union Baptist Church in Pollock.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Poston Hopkins, sons, Charlie Neal and Vernon G. Hopkins, Jr.; parents, Walter and Ruth Kennedy Hopkins; brothers, Chester, Clayton, Jerry and Ned Hopkins and sisters, Pat and Helen.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Joanie Moreau (James) and Phyllis Moreau (Charles) of Pollock and Linda Hopkins, of Alexandria; sons, Christopher Hopkins of Kolin and Richard Hopkins of Pollock; brothers, Willard "Bill" Hopkins of Kolin and Bill Hopkins of Tennessee and sisters, Linda Mills of Alabama and Alice Thompson of Chicago, IL; 27 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren (3 soon expected) and 1 great-great-granddaughter.
